Damn deer
Well, So much for my great little work beater!! My 86 Jetta Diesel is probably dead because of a deer strike. Now I'm gonna have to start looking for another one of these babies and they are getting RARE!!
Sorry, just venting. See a before pic on my website below. If I get the digicam back I'll put an after pic up.

Now, Now, I'm sure you'll be able to find another one and just keep the deer killer for parts. My old man had a 86 Celica he drove to work everyday and had one it the back yard for parts. Smacked a deer, Insurance gave him $1,500 bucks which he got to pocket. Swithed out the grill, side fender and door, went looking for another deer,  !!! The deer are getting awful, are you sure it was a PETA deer (from a previous post PETA bear)?

Anybody know if those deer whistle things for vehicles actually work? They were cheap so we stuck some on and I think some insurance companies are handing them out free to customers.

Sorry to hear about the deer strike. I'm sure I'll get nailed one of these days.
A few months ago I saw a deer get hit and if I didn't see it for myself I wouldn't have believed it. We were following another car doing about 60 when a deer shot out of the woods about 40 feet from the road and ran right into the BACK of the car in front of us. The deer actually ran right into the car rather than the other way around. I guess they get spooked, but that was sure a dumb thing to do and it seems it would have had plenty of time and room to stop.

Yep' the run into cars like moths to flame! For very graceful and athletic animals they sure suck at road crossing  A darn squirrels got more sense then them.
I drive home 4 nights a week and just cross my fingers. It's just a matter of when, not if I get one

GOTTA LAUGH TomG. Our company's insurance requires those whistles on all company vehicles. SOOOOOO we usually have a minimum of 2 sets. Still hit lots of deer.
We haul asphalt out of Nanticoke, Oakville and Missassiaugga, Ont during the winter and we see lots of ONT plates here headed south/north that hit deer so we were thinking maybe deer up there do not understand the US whistles cause they might not say, A ) LMAO... and vice-versus. So you might wanna check the package and see where they were made.
I'll bring it up again, (to check were made maybe Tiawan if so no wonder we are still hitting deer US deer probably do not understand Chineese), at our Spring safety training its always good for a chuckle.

Yes, in my humble, redneck, uneducated opinion, the deer whistles do work. BUT - I am not smart enough to figure out if the whistle will scare them off the road, or scare them on to the road. It will certinally get them moving around. Sometimes that is good, sometimes not.
You do have to keep the bugs cleaned out of them. Its like this... you cannot whistle if your mouth is full of cornbread!
I find it strange that the state assumes all responsibility for all game. The state will tell you when, where, how, and how many of what kind can be "harvested". Let that same animal go and do something wrong such as hit a car and hurt someone--- then the state clames "that ain't my deer".
Worse than that, do not get caught trying to salvage the meat or horns after the animal has done several thousand dollers worth of damage to your property!!!!
Maby the "be good to the animals" people should set up some sort of fund to pay back all the damage that Bambe does to the general motoring public.

Yep, I figured those whistles might be playing loony tunes. Either that or it a way to train deer so they can record Bing Crosby Christmas albums.
The solution I like best is a sign I saw in Michigan. It said 'DEER CROSS HERE.' I wondered how many people the state'd have to hire to teach them how to read. Well, that might have made a dint in the unemployment rate. Or maybe it was just a production idea for a local road kill market.
When I was a kid, a bull elk in a zoo charged a fence where I was when I whistled to attract a friend. Elk are being introduced around here so maybe I don't want those whistles. Also don't know what they do for the bear and moose we have here. Now those really make a mess of cars and the people in them when they're hit.

Hunting season and rut make the Deere about as spinny as a Californian valley girl.
I had one in front of me the other day and it was trying to get off the road. I was near stopped. It looked like it was on ice skates as it could not keep its legs under it. I had seen them trip before but had not reallized how slippery the paved road is to a white tail.
It never seemed to bother moose, prong horn or mule deer much. Never really have seen elk but in the back country so I don't know. Mountain Goat and sheep seem to skip over wet rocks that leave you clinging by your nails.
Maybe that is why the white tail are so bad near a road?

Really sorry to hear about your Jetta. That sucks! I hope you can get it repaired. I cannot think of a better work beater car. If it is an consolation; VW is introducing a 2.0 liter TDI Passat next year and maybe TDI lovers will flock to that model and used Jetta's will be easier to find. That is what I am waiting for......a Passat Wagon TDI. The new 2.0 liter TDI is supposed to have alot more pep to it (135 hp). I hope they have changed the timing belt to a gear drive or chain. In my opinion, the economy of the engine is wasted on the cost of changing the timing belt every 60K or 80K depending on the model. Unless you do the belt replacement yourself, I hear it cost about $600 - $800. That and they need to do something about the EGR system. It can be turned of with the VAG-COM but you think they would come up with a better design than that. I want a TDI bad but I am waiting until they get it right.
What all go damaged on your Jetta? Does it look like it is economically repairable? If not maybe you can take what the insurance gives you for it and find another Jetta with a blown engine or trans. and transplant your stuff over to the new car body. That sounds like a BIG pain in the butt and not sure if it would even be worth it. Again, sorry to hear about your Jetta, but very glad nobody was hurt. Did you at least make some venison sausage and steaks?
